Cell Energy and Detox Balance

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis or Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) is a method measuring your “body composition”-the measurement of body fat in relation to lean body mass.   It also assesses fluid compartments which normal fluid distribution is associated with immunity, high function, and longevity.  It is an integral part of a health and nutrition assessment.

How Does a BIA Work?

BIA is much more sophisticated than your bathroom scale, but just as painless-and almost as quick. BIA is a simple procedure that can be performed right in our office in a matter of minutes with the help of a sophisticated, computerized analysis.  This analyzer “calculates” your tissue and fluid compartments-using an imperceptible electrical current passed through pads placed on one hand and foot as you lie comfortably clothed on an exam table. In a few minutes, you will have very accurate measurements to help create an effective, personalized program to improve your health status.

Why is Body Composition Important to Your Health?

Body composition can be divided into two parts: body fat and lean body mass. Body fat is pretty simple to understand-it’s just fat. Lean body mass includes everything in your body except fat (i.e., muscles, bones, organs, other tissues, fluids, etc.) While a certain amount of body fat is necessary for normal functioning, excess fat in relation to lean body mass, a condition known as altered body composition, can greatly increase your health risks. Altered body composition most often refers to increased fat deposition and/or muscle loss.
Muscle is the body’s biologically active tissue and needs for a far greater amount of caloric fuel to maintain itself compared to body fat. Therefore, a high ratio of muscle to fat increases your metabolism, meaning you burn more calories each day. Furthermore, muscle contains proteins, which are necessary for the vitality of your whole body, loss of protein stores (muscle) means loss of function. If the body’s protein reserves are already depleted by muscle loss, there is less for the body to draw on in the case of illness. That is why muscle mass and strength are considered the top two indicators of healthy aging and why building muscle is the key to rejuvenation.
The body is a large battery which some have referred to in a very popular movie.  The cells are the producers of the energy.  The ability of cells to generate and store energy is a reflection of health status.  The BIA measures the cells ability to store energy and indicates the cell breakdown (cell wall permeability).   The purpose of the analysis is to monitor and improve function.  It can help maintain function, productivity, immunity, physical performance, and longevity.
BIA also serves to measure your progress as you work to improve your health. Improving your BIA measurement, or maintaining a healthy BIA measurement, can help keep your body functioning properly for healthy aging and reduced risk to illnesses. With your BIA results, Dr. King can recommend a personalized dietary plan, nutritional supplements, and exercise to help you support optimal health and well-being for a lifetime.
